A list of frequently asked questions regarding all parts of the PINEMAP Internship Program

 

Q.  I'm having trouble submitting the application- what can I do?

A.  Be sure you are using Adobe Reader to fill in the form and submit it.  Mac users may have problems when completing the application.  Contact the program coordinator to be sure your application has been received.

 

Q.  Where is the internship located?

A.  Interns will be situated at the mentor's institution, so the site varies depending on the graduate student/post-doc/staff researcher interns are placed with.  Interns will be situated at the mentor's institution.  There are 11 universities in the southeastern US participating in the broader coordinated agricultural project.


Q.  Is there more money for interns to travel (e.g., lodging and per diem expenses)?

A.  No.

 

Q.  How will I [interns] be paid?

A.  Interns are temporary wage employees of Virginia Tech and are paid every 2 weeks via direct deposit.

 

Q.  Do I have to find housing for my intern?

A.  Helping the intern with locating suitable housing is greatly appreciated, and the program coordinator will help with this.

 

Q.  Does the intern have to have a separate research project?

A.  While this is not a requirement, we strongly encourage a separate research project when viable.

 

Q.  Can interns work on other research projects outside of PINEMAP during the summer?

A.  Absolutely!

 

Q.  Do I have to be a PINEMAP graduate student to host an intern?

A.  No, post-docs and Forest Service researchers are also eligible to mentor.

 

Q.  What is the $1,000 for?

A.  This is only for materials and mileage reimbursement during the fall distance course.
